The Aperture
Practice

Before qualifying as a counsellor, I have worked for 28 years in education. During this time, I have taught Biology, served as a Head of Year, held senior leadership roles, worked for the Boarding Schools Association, and worked extensively as a Houseparent supporting young people through both academic and personal challenges.
Having worked in both state and independent education, I understand the unique pressures faced by students, teachers, parents and school leaders. Much of my professional life has involved helping young people navigate the complexities of adolescence, identity, relationships, self-confidence and mental wellbeing.
The space to breathe
"I believe that counselling should be collaborative, compassionate and grounded in genuine human connection"
The name “Aperture” represents a consciously held space -
a deliberate opening created within the busy daily landscape to think, reflect, and reconnect with yourself.

I am Graham Baily, an NCPS accredited integrative counsellor with a lifelong commitment to education, wellbeing and personal growth.
Alongside my counselling qualification, I hold an Honours degree in Applied and Human Biology with a specialism in psychology. This scientific background continues to influence my understanding of emotional wellbeing and informs my particular interest in the relationship between neurobiology, physical and psychological health.
I am fascinated with how traumas affect the body and the mind. These can be 'micro-traumas', for example an argument, a toothache, or a series of small bumps in the road; or a major trauma. Spending time navigating in and amongst these events, and allowing yourself the uninterrupted time to consider their impact, can be life-changing.
Sometimes, just some space, and someone to listen, is what is needed to start working out some of the tangles.....
My counselling approach is integrative and adaptive, drawing on a range of evidence-based modalities including person-centred therapy, gestalt, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and transactional analysis (TA).
I believe that each individual has the capacity to find their own way forward when provided with a supportive, empathetic and non-judgemental space in which to explore their experiences. Rather than offering solutions, I work collaboratively with clients to deepen self-awareness, understand patterns of thinking, feelings and behaviour, and identify the changes that feel right for them.
Where appropriate, I may also incorporate coaching-informed approaches, particularly with professionals and senior leaders, to support personal growth, decision-making, resilience and the achievement of meaningful goals. My aim is to help clients gain greater clarity, confidence and autonomy in navigating both personal and professional challenges.
